That's how you beat the bastards, that's how you never give in. You love all the people going through the same thing you are going through, and you never stop loving them. They can never take that away from you.

A month of Moore #8: But, like, I didn't write it down or anything.

Moore disowned the puerile humour and mega-violence of DR and Quinch 10 minutes after he finished writing them, but as a 9-year-old kid, I thought they were the funniest fucking comics in the whole world.

A month of Moore #7: Let's talk about money.

Miracleman's fascist super utopia sure does look like fun, and while it might be nice to get some super-powers and float among the space babies, I'm more envious of the easy disregard for all the money in the world. 

A month of Moore #6: 'E's just very difficult to buy for.

Vast and powerful entities from beyond the veil might be able to get comfortable in the garden shed, but they will not be placated by a gift voucher.

A month of Moore #5: Since yesterday.

This annual was my first taste of Moore's American comics, and Swamp Thing's quest from heaven to hell felt like a true revelation, but the casual horror of Arcane going through all that grossness, in just one day, really sunk its teeth into my head.

True Detective almost ruined it for everybody when it totally ripped off this part for the final moments of its first season, but the beautiful optimism of the thought still shines through. 

A Month of Moore #3: Did you see anything?

Things get very strange and intense as Sir William Gull slaughters his way through Whitechapel, but sometimes the breaking down of linear time around the events manifests itself in the most mundane fashions. A glimpse in the window, a fleeting glance at the future and the odd technology it offers. No wonder Sir William looks so afraid.

A month of Moore #2: He'd never heard an adult screaming before.

Moore only wrote the first episode of this long-running British horror strip, but it was one of the very first things I ever read by the writer, and I was already falling for his way with words.

A month of Moore #1: We can always only seek the highest ground.

At the end of a long comics career, a small grace note which encapsulates all the wisdom Moore has managed to gather into one true idea - it's a hard fucking world, and we all have to work tough paths, but it makes it so much easier if we don't walk them alone.
