Where The Body Was
By Brubaker/Phillips
This creative team have produced so many comics, and while the Criminal and Reckless books remain the clear highlight, this slice of suburban noir - where there are no grand criminal conspiracies, just dopey people doing dopey shit - is one of their better standalone graphic novels.
Instead of dark whispers in smoky bars, it’s willful blindness on bland suburban streets. It feels autobiographical - not in a direct way, it just has the taste of truth about the little mysteries that pile up in dull little communities.
Phillips’ art definitely has a brighter palette in this one, but remains as wide and open and compelling as ever. And his skills at capturing facial expressions have never been more prevalent, because in these types of stories, while nobody talks about the dark things on the streets, it’s there in furtive glances and furrowed brows.
