Kommix
By Charles Burns
Burns has always been a master of mood, and his comics drip with malevolence and sick, sweaty horror, even if it’s just a story about dumb suburban kids doing dumb stuff.
But he’s also so good on a purely design front, so this collection of fictional comic covers are beautiful to look at. They are also quite grotesque in the manner of something extremely normal being examined from the wrong angle, and are often laugh out loud funny
The ones that are the funniest are the ones that juxtapose the disturbing art with an innocuous title, and that gets a bit lost when many of the titles are in a strange language of Burns’ invention, but there enough pretty pictures and lost heartbreaks - and extreme body horror - to keep you engrossed.
