The games I played: All the freedom to do what you want

There have been a million games in the past 20 years, and I've dabbled with the odd Batman or Assassins Creed thing, but that's really all. Except for the Grand Theft Autos. While I do end up playing them 10 years after they come out, I always play the GTAs.

I always did, right from the top-down original, gorunga and all. The pixelated bloodshed was fun and all, with a decidedly wicked sense of humour that still occasionally shines through in the more recent versions. And it had real speed, with these tiny cars blazing down the digital street.

But it was the freedom - the ability to just drive randomly around the city was a new thing, opening up all sorts of possibilities. Dipshits have been crticising GTA games from since the start, without ever realising that just because you can do a lot of the awful things in the game, you don't have to. The choice is the real thrill.

GTA has grown and grown since that first version and you can do so much more - a mate of mine has a son who plays it to be a cop, and obeys all the road rules, and ignores all the devils in the game

I'm literally getting into GTA IV again, because it's the latest version my aging PC can handle, but V will be the first thing I get when I upgrade. After all, it's nearly 10 years old now.

I get all the missions done in the end.
