Great moments in NZ cinema #7: He kicks arse

Peter Jackson's films had a wicked sense of humour from the start - the exploding sheep gag in Bad Taste is a masterpiece of comic timing - and there are still traces of it there in his later film works, (and non-existent in his eternal fiddling with historical footage).

But nothing in his films ever made me laugh harder than Stuart Devenie's beautifully snide Father McGruder taking his kung-fu stand against the undead abominations filling his graveyard, and proceeding to kick arse for the lord in an extreme form of divine intervention.

It comes out of nowhere, and goes nowhere, with the good Father quickly joining the rank ranks of the undead. But the best jokes don't have to be vital to the plot, they can just be.
