Creamerie (with a Y)

I was never tempted by the Y The Last Man TV show - even though I read every issue of the original comic, it was always way too cold for me, but I do find it a little bit funny that after years and years old development, it still only got one season that came and went without many people noticing.

I also didn't need to see it, because I'd already seen the thoroughly excellent Creamerie series, which also wiped out all the men in the world and screened here in New Zealand few months ago, and is now available on Hulu.

Because this is New Zealand and we such a fucking cliche about everyone knowing everyone, I do have to point out that I work two metres away from writer/actor Perlina Lau in her day job as a world affairs radio producer, and she is an absolute legend of a human being who does an incredible job on the series.

But it's still a terrific show, even without that workplace familiarity. It reinforces my belief that when the apocalypse goes down, America loses its goddamn mind and everyone shots everyone else, while the rest of the world deals with it as best they can, and pretty much keeps things going (although there is always a deep, dirty secret in the new society). I would love to see a The Walking Dead: Canada series where all the Canadians are sipping nice coffee and watching events over the border with polite horror.

In Creamerie, all the men are gone, lost to the plague, and the women have got on with things, keeping society moving along through institutional use of IVF and sheer girl power. As a weird comedy/drama/horror thing, it does have that dark secret at the heart of it and goes to some interesting places.

The penultimate episode feels like an old school 70s/80s low budget horror film where they have no money but access to a terrific old house, and the final episode of the first season has some imagery that is guaranteed to linger in the mind. (It's always so fucking refreshing to watch something and say 'I have not seen that ever'.)

It's fucking great. Perlina and her pals know what they are doing.
